Question:

I’ve got a grower with runner peanuts that have not lapped the middles yet and this week have gotten a flush of a whole lot of pigweed. They are very small from just emerged to two inches and it’s a ton of them where no row closure. The peanuts were previously sprayed with paraquat+1.5 pt Storm+ Zidua at 3 weeks emerged then about 3 weeks ago with 12.5 oz Cobra + 1 pt Butyrac+ 1 pt Dual Magnum. What would you suggest we use this time?

Jordan:

The sure thing to get them if they are small is Ultra Blazer at this point. It is late in the season but if the weeds are not controlled there will be a major issue. With that said, I recommended 1 pint of 2,4-DB for a similar situation on the research station in the breeder’s field but that was primarily because I wasn’t sure what was going to happen with breeding lines and varieties when it comes to Ultra Blazer. The 2,4-DB alone would give fair control if the weeds are really small. I’m surprised that many weeds got through Zidua and Dual Magnum. I have seen modest yield reductions with a PPO herbicide this late but no issue with 2,4-DB.
